Holidays on Sri Lanka - Home Page

has spent around seven years in total on Sri Lanka and will be returning again for six months in October 2008 until the end of March 2009 - LINK to itinerary.
Having
traveled around most of the Colombo government
controlled part of the island, was impressed with the weather, good, but not
great, value of the better hotels - compared with Europe, quality of the food,
cleanliness of the stunning white sand beaches, friendliness of the Sri Lankan
people and their heritage, plus much more.
Based just north of the capital of Sri Lanka Colombo near
the costal town of Negombo.
Having visited many of the resorts, tourist and cultural areas right across the
island.
The Sri Lankan
people are generally good natured people, pleased and satisfied with themselves.
They smile their way through life and its problems.
The Sri Lankan Government Security Forces were a bit 'twitchy' about photography
when we last went (2008) around Government buildings and there are armed uniformed
personnel everywhere. This shouldn't detract too much from your pleasure. Just
oblige the authority and smile!
Sri Lanka is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is probably best known for the production and export of 'Ceylon'
tea, closely followed by coffee, coconuts and rubber. Sri Lanka boasts a progressive
and modern agricultural and industrial economy with a self proclaimed 'highest
(average) per capita income in South Asia'. The natural scenic beauty of Sri
Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and general landscape, as well as Sri Lanka's
rich cultural heritage and history make it a world's renowned tourist destinations.
Sri Lanka is or has become a popular 'package tour' destination for holidays
from Western Europe and the old eastern bloc including Russia. Sri Lanka is a
bit 'difficult' for independent travellers at the moment.
Flying time to Sri Lanka from the UK is around 10.5 hours
The national languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhala (or Sinhalese / Singalese)
and Tamil, although English is widely spoken and understood in tourist areas.
A visitor visa is not required by full UK passport holding nationals that
are staying in Sri Lanka less than 30 days.
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the currency.
Sri
Lanka time is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT.

The conflict between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE, commonly known as “the Tamil Tigers”) ended in May 2009. Although
the conflict is over, the LTTE are believed to retain some capability to mount
terrorist attacks such as grenade or explosive device attacks and shootings.
The Government has relaxed the State of Emergency, under which it has extensive
anti-terrorism powers but there are still heightened levels of security (e.g.
checkpoints, road blocks) throughout the country. You should exercise a high
level of vigilance. The risk for the most part is one of being caught in the
wrong place at the wrong time. In order to minimise this, you should avoid military,
government and paramilitary locations. Always carry formal photographic identification
with you. Stop and show your ID when asked to do so. If you are detained, you
should ask the authorities to contact the British High Commission.
Fatal attacks linked to the LTTE occurred throughout the country into 2009.
Most attacks have been directed against Government and military targets though
a number have been focussed on civilian targets such as crowded public places,
public transport and market areas. Some of the most significant attacks included
a suicide bomb at a political gathering in March 2009 and an air raid on military
targets in Colombo in February 2009.
JeGraNet.com statement - 15 October 2008 - Quote from the British Foreign
and Commonwealth Office website: "There is a high threat from terrorism in Sri
Lanka. Fatal attacks have become more frequent. They have occurred in Colombo
and throughout Sri Lanka, including places frequented by expatriate and foreign
travellers. Further attacks may occur at any time. There is an increasing risk
of British nationals being caught up in an attack". As independent travellers
we left Colombo after just 9 days into our planned 6 month stay as a result of
a feeling of insecurity, however we are sure that 'package tour' travellers to
tourist resorts will probably enjoy a worry free holiday. |
