Map of Sri Lanka showing the location of Puttalam in relation to 'C' Colombo

Puttalam, Sri Lanka

Puttalam Photo Puttalam is a busy fishing and salt producing town just under 130km north of Colombo on the A3 coast road and railway. Positioned at the southern end of a large salt water lagoon of the same name in the North Western Province, or "Wayamba" as it is known in Sri Lanka.

Situated at the apex of the Coconut triangle, Puttalam is the second largest Coconut producer of Sri Lanka. Prawn farming and cement manufacture are the other two local cash generators.

The old Dutch fort on the Puttalam lagoon spur at Kalpitiya, underlines the historical importance of this area of north west Sri Lanka.
